Integral de Damasco

Esta é uma faca integral de damasco que concluí recentemente. Sua lâmina possui algumas características de uma faca de luta, como a ponta caída e o falso fio projetado acima da linha do dorso embora não possua uma guarda, tipicamente presente em facas desse tipo. Ela possui 6” (aproximadamente 15cm) de lâmina e 10”(aproximadamente 25cm) de comprimento total. This is a damascus integral knife that I finished recently. The blade has some features which are typically found in fighting knives such as the clip point and the false edge which arises from the back of the blade. However, it does not have a guard which is fundamental for a fighting knife. The length of the blade is 6” and the overall length is 10”.

O damasco é composto pelos aços 1095 e 15n20 e possui cerca de 190 camadas. Eu tentei criar o padrão chamado “gotas de chuva” que consiste em furar a superfície da barra de damasco para criar esses círculos concêntricos. Entretanto, o padrão não ficou bem definido por imperícia da minha parte. Acredito que as principais razões para o padrão ter se distorcido são: a barra de damasco não ficou com as camadas perfeitamente paralelas ao longo das dobras e eu fiz os furos antes de forjar a forma geral da lâmina. Espero corrigir essas falhas nas próximas tentativas. The damascus was made of 1095 and 15n20 steel and has approximately 190 layers. I’ve tried to make the so-called raindrop pattern which is produced by drilling holes on the surface of the bar that will become the concentric circles on the etched blade. However, the pattern did not come out as expected mainly due to my lack of skills. I believe that the two primary reasons for the distortion on the pattern are: the layers were not parallel when I finished the Damascus bar and I drilled the holes before the overall shape of the knife was forged. I hope to correct these problems on future projects.

O cabo foi feito de radica de maple estabilizada e eu incluí um pequeno pino de inox remanchado em ambos os lados. The handle is made of stabilized maple burl, and I used a small stainless steel pin on the center which was rounded on both sides.

Mini Chef

Ha algum tempo uma grande amiga me pediu uma faca chefe menor do que as tradicionais. Decidimos que o tamanho ideal para ela seria uma lâmina de 6 ½” (165mm) de comprimento e pouco menos de 2” (50mm) de largura. A lâmina foi forjada a partir de uma peça única de aço 5160 e foi tratada com percloreto de ferro, para que sofra menos com a oxidação natural de uma faca de cozinha. Some time ago a good friend asked me a chefs knife smaller than the regular ones. We decided that it should be a 6 1/2” long and 2” wide blade. Tha blade was forged from a solid piece of 5160 carbon steel and was etched with ferric perchlorate to protect it from the stains that the use in the kitchen may produce.

O cabo foi feito de rádica de Box Elder Maple estabilizado. The handle was made out of a block of stabilized Box Elder Burl.

Bocote Hunter

Essa é minha mais recente produção. Trata-se de uma faca estilo Hunter forja da em aço 52100 com 27cm (10 ½ “) de comprimento total e 14,5cm (5 ½ “) de lâmina e cabo de Bocote. This is my new creation, a Hunter knife forged from 52100 steel with 10 ½ “ overall length and the blade is 5 ½ “ long. The handle was made of Bocote wood.

Bowie de Chifre / Deer Bowie

Esta é minha mais recente criação, uma faca no estilo bowie forjada de aço 1095 com guarda e pomo em aço inox. O cabo foi feito a partir de um chifre de cervo o qual procurei modificar o mínimo possível. As dimensões são 30cm (~11 ¾”) de comprimento total dos quais 18cm (~7”) são de lâmina./ It is my new creation, a bowie knife forged from a flat bar of 1095 steel and with guard and pommel made of stainless steel. The handle is made of a piece of deer horn which I attempt to preserve as original as possible. The main dimensions are 30cm (about 11 ¾”) of overall length in which 18cm (about 7”) is the blade.

Não há pinos, pois, a espiga se estende até o fim do cabo e é presa por meio de uma porca inserida em uma semiesfera de inox. O pomo foi recortado para acompanhar a forma natural do chifre./ There are no pins because the tang goes all over the handle and is screwed at the pommel by a nut which was inserted in a stainless steel semi-sphere. The pommel was ground to follows the natural shape of the handle tip.

Diferentemente das últimas facas que fiz, essa guarda não foi soldada. Procurei fazer um ajuste preciso e colei as duas peças com um adesivo epoxi (JB weld)./ Unlike the previous knives I’ve made, in this one, I did not solder the guard. I attempted to create a precise fitting instead and glues it with JB Weld.

A bainha é de couro de boi tingido e costurado à mão e foi recoberta com couro de tilápia tingido, para que sua textura não destoe muito do cabo./ The sheath is made of bull leather dyed and sewed by hand, and it was covered by a fish leather (Tilapia) also dyed to match the texture of the handle.

Tuna Skinner

Concluí recentimente esta faca skinner (para remover o couro de animais) baseada em uma faca que havia feito em 2011. O nome, desta vez, remete ao seu formato compacto e curvado, similar a um atum. Trata-se de uma lamina larga e curta (10cm x 5cm) com um falso fio no dorso, feita de aço 6150. Este aço é similar ao 5160 porém possim mais cromo e menos carbono. Mesmo assim, é perfeitamente temperável, como o 5160. A faca foi feita apenas por desbaste e a lâmina é fina para garantir um bom corte sempre.

This is the skinner knife I made recently based on a similar piece produced in 2011. The name makes reference to the compact and curved shape of a tuna. Is it a wide but short blade (about 4" by 2") and a false edge made of 6150 steel. This steel is similar to the 5160 but has a higher amount of chromium whereas it has a smaller quantity of carbon. However, the quenchablility is similar to the 5160 steel. The shape was obtained just by stock removal process and the edge of the blade was kept thin to ensure great cutting power.

Como é comum nas facas skinners, o comprimento dessa peça é reduzido e por isso a geometria do cabo é bastante anatômica para garantir firmeza ao segurar a faca. A guarda e pinos são de aço inoxidavel e a empunhadura é feita de talas de Angico Preto.

  Just like most skinner knifes, the overal lenght is reduced and, therefore, the shape of the handle was designed to fit the fingers and grant a good grabbing. The bolster and pins are made of stainless steel and the handle is made of Angico Preto scales.

Stock Removal EDC

This is the last knife i made only by stock removal. It is made of 5160 steel and the scales are imbuia wood. It has 23cm overall lenght (about 9") and it is 5mm thick at the beggining of the blade.

Since most of the knives i made were full flat grinded, it was quite chellenging to create well defined bevels. I made a mirror like finish but I'm not sure if it is a good option for an EDC(every day carry).

Bowie Pau Brasil

This is a Bowie knife (fighting knife) I just finished. The overall length is 12" (about 30cm) and the blade is made of 5160 carbon steel. The handle is made of a piece of Pau-Brazil and the guard is stainless steel.

Just like the last knife i made, the handle presents new curves, edges and bevels which I tried to keep sharp and well defined. The following pictures present some steps of the blade creation.
